Root Canal
Therapy

When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue, where the nerve is located, leading to an infection inside the tooth. If left untreated, this infection can cause an abscess and other serious health problems. During root canal therapy, the infected tissue is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Finally, the tooth is filled with composite material to restore its function and appearance. At our dental office, we provide effective root canal treatments to preserve your oral health and comfort.

The Root Canal
Procedure

  1. Diagnosis: your dentist will examine your tooth and may take X-rays to determine the extent of the infection and to plan the treatment.
  2. Anesthesia: local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area, ensuring you feel little to no discomfort during the procedure.
  3. Accessing the pulp: the dentist creates a small opening in the tooth to access the infected or inflamed pulp.
  4. Cleaning and shaping: using special instruments, the dentist carefully removes the infected pulp and cleans the inside of the tooth. The root canals are shaped to allow for filling.
  5. Filling the canals: once cleaned and shaped, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent further infection.
  6. Sealing the tooth: the opening in the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. In some cases, a crown may be placed on the tooth to restore its strength and appearance.

Aftercare and
Recovery

After root canal therapy, it is normal to experience some discomfort or sensitivity, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Follow your dentist’s instructions for caring for your tooth, which may include:

  • Avoiding chewing on the treated tooth: until the tooth is restored with a permanent filling or crown, avoid putting too much pressure on it.
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene: Continue to brush and floss regularly to keep the treated tooth and surrounding gums clean and healthy.
  • Follow-up visits: attend scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist to ensure the tooth is healing properly.
